The DCM application can be accessed remotely in a number of ways to include browser access.
VPN and RDP both enable remote access, but they solve different problems: VPN gives you secure network access, while RDP gives you remote control of a specific machine. In practice, organisations often use both—VPN for secure entry into the network, and RDP for controlled access to servers or desktops.
VPN (Virtual Private Network)
- Creates an encrypted tunnel from your device into the organisation’s network.
- Once connected, your device behaves as if it’s inside the office LAN.
- Ideal for accessing shared drives, intranet apps, email servers, internal web systems.
- Broad access = larger attack surface if the endpoint is compromised.
RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol)
- Lets you control a specific remote computer as if you’re sitting in front of it.
- Sends screen output to you and receives your keyboard/mouse input.
- Ideal for IT administration, specialised software, server access, troubleshooting.
- Highly targeted access but a major attack vector if exposed directly to the internet.
Remote Desktop Connection/Protocol (RDP) from a PC to a server
- If not obvious, you will find this under Start - Accessories - Remote Desktop Connection
- Save to your taskbar for easy access. To do this right click and select Pin to Taskbar
- You will need the IP address to the Server or your IT people may give you something like mail.servername.com.au (It could include a port number :xxxx at the end as well)
- You need your username and password
- Ensure in Show Options - Display you have full screen selected and also under Local Resources select Printers and Clipboard. Select More ... to share drives.
